A sign can only be as sharp as the file it starts with. If a logo, photo, or design looks fuzzy when it is enlarged on your screen, it will usually look fuzzy when we print it too.
That does not mean everything has to be perfect before you come to Signvillenz. There is plenty we can do to help with design, layout, file clean-up, and preparing artwork for print. The best results happen when the file gives us enough detail to work with.
Good artwork files help create signs that look clean, professional, and true to what you had in mind. They also give you more control over the finished result, from colours and sizing to fonts, layout, and image quality.

Why file type matters for signage
A sign is often much larger than the file you see on a phone, website, or computer screen. That is where file quality matters.
A small image might look fine as a thumbnail. Stretch it across a shopfront, vehicle door, window, banner, fence panel, or roadside sign, and every weakness becomes more visible. Blurry edges, jagged text, dull colours, and pixelated images can all show up once the artwork is enlarged.
The file type also affects how easily we can adjust the design. Some files allow us to resize, recolour, edit text, move elements, and prepare clean cut lines. Others are “flat” images, which means the whole design is locked together like a photo.
That is why we often ask for:

A PDF is often the easiest and most useful file to send, especially if the file has been exported for print. A good PDF can hold text, images, layout, colours, and vector artwork in one place.
That said, not every PDF is print-ready. A low-resolution JPEG placed into a PDF does not magically become sharp. If the original image is blurry, saving it as a PDF will not fix it.
Vector files are best for logos, text, and clean edges
Vector files are the gold standard for logos, text-based artwork, icons, shapes, and simple graphics.
A vector file uses paths and points rather than pixels. That means it can be scaled up or down without losing sharpness. A vector logo can work on a business card, a ute door, a shop sign, or a large wall graphic and still keep clean edges.

If you have a logo, the best file to send is usually the original vector version. This is often the file your designer supplied when your logo was first created.

Why screenshots are not ideal for signage
Screenshots are useful when showing an idea, but they are rarely good enough for finished signage.
A screenshot is usually a low-resolution image of what appears on a screen. It may include compression, soft edges, and small text. When enlarged for a sign, those problems grow with it.
The same applies to images copied from websites, social media pages, or email signatures. They are often made small so they load quickly online. That makes them poor starting points for print.
If you only have a screenshot, still send it through. It can help us understand the layout or style you want. We may be able to recreate the artwork properly, redraw the logo, or guide you towards a better file.
High-resolution images are best for photos and detailed graphics
Photos do not work the same way as vector artwork. A photo is made of pixels. The more pixels it has, the more detail it can hold.
This type of file is called a raster image. Common raster file types include:
JPEG
PNG
TIFF
PSD
Raster images can print beautifully when they are large enough and clear enough. They are often used for:
Product photos
Food images
Real estate signage

The main thing to remember is simple:
If an image is enlarged and it looks pixelated on your screen, it will look pixelated for us too.
There are tools that can improve some images, and we can often tidy small issues, but there are limits. We cannot pull missing detail out of a tiny file and make it look like a sharp professional photo at full sign size.
A photo taken on a modern camera or phone may be fine, especially if it has not been compressed through messaging apps or downloaded from social media. The original file is usually much better than a copied or resized version.
What “high resolution” means in plain English
Resolution can sound technical, but the idea is not complicated.
A high-resolution image has enough detail for the size it will be printed. A small sign may not need the same file size as a large wall graphic. Viewing distance matters too. A sign seen from across the road can sometimes use different image settings than one viewed up close.
As a simple guide, better files usually have:
Large pixel dimensions
Clear detail when zoomed in
No obvious blur
No heavy compression marks
Good lighting and contrast
The original file, not a screenshot or copied version
File size alone does not tell the full story, but it can be a clue. A 50 KB image is usually too small for large signage. A photo that is several MB is more likely to contain useful detail, though we still need to check it.
What happens when a file is too small or pixelated
Pixelation happens when an image does not have enough pixels for the size it is being printed. Instead of smooth curves and clear details, you start to see little squares, jagged edges, or soft blurry areas.
This is most obvious in:
Logos saved as small JPEGs
Images copied from websites
Photos downloaded from social media
Screenshots
Old artwork files
Files that have been compressed many times
For example, a logo pulled from a website header might look fine at 300 pixels wide. If that same file needs to be printed 1 metre wide on a sign, the image has to stretch far beyond its original detail. The result will likely look rough.
The same thing happens with photos. A small photo might look clear on a phone because the screen is small. Once printed large, faces, products, textures, and text can lose sharpness.

PDF files are popular because they are easy to share and can preserve a layout well. For signage, a good PDF can be very useful.
A print-ready PDF may include:

Proper bleed, if needed

The biggest benefit is that a PDF can keep the design together. That helps reduce accidental changes when the file is opened on another computer.
Still, a PDF is only as good as what is inside it. If the PDF contains a low-resolution logo or a blurry photo, the PDF will not solve that. Think of a PDF like a container. It can hold excellent artwork, or it can hold poor-quality artwork.
If you are exporting from a design programme, choose a print-quality setting where possible. Avoid options that say “small file size” if the artwork is meant for signage, because those settings often compress images.

That is completely fine.

How to send files that give the best result
The best thing to send is the highest-quality version you have. If you are unsure which file is best, send a few options. We can check them and let you know what will work.

Any photos as original JPEG, TIFF, PNG, or PSD files
A PDF of the finished layout, if you have one

Where the sign will be used
Try to avoid sending images through apps that reduce quality. Many messaging and social platforms compress files to make them faster to send. Emailing the original file, uploading it, or sharing it from cloud storage often keeps more detail.
Also avoid renaming a file to a different extension. Changing `logo.jpg` to `logo.pdf` does not turn it into a vector file. The artwork inside stays the same.
