A New Chapter with Heart
The Kaukapakapa Hotel has its own rich history and has recently undergone a thoughtful revival to create something new within its walls.
That “something new” is Shed 16—the pub and restaurant space now brought to life by Matt & Sophia, whose aroha, energy, and warmth have shaped its evolution. With the backing of the hotel’s owners & shareholders, they have created a space that feels local, welcoming, and full of character. And as the local community noticed a new activity in behind the long closed doors of the local hotel - we joined the journey.
We spent time with Matt & Sophia, learning about their ideas and the creativity of Christine Granger. We got to know their vision, and soaked in the vibe they were creating. It wasn’t about imposing a design—it was about helping shape something that felt true to them, to Shed 16, and to the wider community.
Bringing the Vision to Life
The transformation of Shed 16 was a true team effort, with many hands including the creative team, builders, tradies, locals, historians, owners/shareholders and of course; Matt, Sophia & their whānau - all contributing to its new identity. We were proud to be a part of that.
Our role was to help translate their vision and that feeling, into visual elements that would shape the experience from the moment people arrived.
Here’s what we contributed:
Window graphics that offer a first peek into the Shed 16 experience—featuring the logo and custom artwork that hint at the warmth, character, and local flavour waiting inside.
Internal door glass graphics that gently guide you through the space, welcoming you into each distinct area.
Wall murals that bring a sense of personality and familiarity, making the space feel lived-in and loved.
History boards that weave together local stories and atmosphere, adding depth and connection to the spaces they inhabit.
Exterior signage, including light boxes, that give Shed 16 its street presence—inviting, bold, and unmistakably part of the Kaukapakapa landscape.
A Fridge wrap that’s playful, stunning and one of those unexpected touches that makes the place feel special.
A beautiful timeline that traces the rich history of the hotel itself—honouring its past and giving locals and visitors a chance to connect with the stories that shaped it.
From Then to Now
We’ve captured the transformation through a series of before-and-after photos that show just how far Shed 16 has come. From faded walls and quiet corners to vibrant storytelling surfaces and welcoming spaces, the change is something you can feel.
THEN....
to NOW...
Honouring the Past
To make sure the design stayed true to the building’s roots, alongside Sophia, teamed up with the wonderful team at Te Awaroa Helensville Museum. Their support and historical content helped us bring real stories into the space—connecting past and present in a way that feels authentic and meaningful.
Looking Ahead
Being part of the Shed 16 transformation has been something really special. It wasn’t just about design—it was about connection, community, and helping breathe new life into a place that means a lot to Kaukapakapa and our wider region.
From the first conversations to the final touches, it’s been a privilege to work alongside Matt, Sophia, the owners, and everyone else who brought their heart to this project.
Shed 16 is more than a refreshed space—it’s a new chapter in a much-loved local story, and we’re proud to have played a small part in it.
